Model answer
When the main verb is in the past, subordinate verbs shift back: present → imparfait, passé composé → plus-que-parfait, futur → conditionnel. "Il dit qu'il vient" → "Il a dit qu'il venait."
Why
This concordance is stricter in French than in English.
