What's the difference between participe présent and gérondif?

Participe présent = verb form ending in -ant, used as adjective or for a cause. "Les étudiants parlant français..." Gérondif = en + -ant, expresses manner/simultaneity. "En parlant, il m'a convaincu."
Why
Participe présent can have its own subject; gérondif cannot.
