How do you place adjectives correctly in French?

Most adjectives follow the noun: "une voiture rouge." BAGS adjectives (Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size) precede: beau, jeune, bon, grand, petit, vieux, nouveau, joli. Some change meaning based on position.
Why
Ancien before noun = former. Ancien after noun = ancient. Propre before = own. Propre after = clean. Grand before = great. Grand after = tall.
