When do you use imparfait vs passé composé?

Imparfait = ongoing, habitual, or descriptive past ("I used to...", "was ...ing"). Passé composé = completed action ("I did X"). "Je mangeais quand il est arrivé" — I was eating when he arrived.
Why
Rule: imparfait sets the scene; passé composé interrupts it with an event.
