When do you use "tu" vs "vous" in French?

Model answer
Use tu with friends, family, peers, children and people who have invited you to tutoyer. Use vous with strangers, elders, superiors, service staff and any situation of formality or respect.
Why
When in doubt, use vous. The other person may invite you: "On peut se tutoyer." Never switch to tu without an invitation.
